It's a little unreal...practicum is finally starting! Tomorrow will be day 1 of...23 or 24! I know all my fellow pre-service teachers must be feeling the same: nervous, excited, slightly anxious, fidgety....
Today's EPOP/ practicum prep workshop was valuable and we heard lots of words of encouragement and advice.
I'm excited to do my "getting-to-know-you" activity with the Grade 4's tomorrow! I spent some time adapting a funny song I learned in Gr.6 ukulele class so it could be used. The song is called "I Love Onions."
Here's my cover of it, even though it's quite embarassing haha:

Now that you know what the tune is, here's how I adapted it so it can be used as an introduction song.
First, I sing:
My name's Elaine, but you call me Miss Kao.
I like to draw and sing funny songs
And mmm.....I love onions!
Then, it's a call and response type affair with me and each student alternating (students parts are in brackets):
What's your name? (My name is ____)
What do you like? (I love_____)
Hmm....do you like onions? (students will shout YES! or NO!)
There are 20 students in the class and I'm hoping to hear each one sing. I worried that the other students waiting their turn may become bored so after every 4 students the whole class will sing the chorus together. (Onions, onions ya ya ya!)
I will be bringing my ukulele and since I'll be strumming chords the whole time, I was trying to think of a way that I could record what each student say they love because it's important to collect this information so I can get to know my students better. I decided to prepare some sticky notes for them to write their favourite thing on. To shorten the time, I wrote their names on the stickies already, so I will stick them on their desks at the beginning. They'll have about 10 seconds to write down the first favourite thing that comes to mind.
I'm hoping this is a good way to ensure that they're thinking for themselves because I find that when students have to think on the spot, they often just follow the person that went before them. Anyway, I should go to sleep now so I can wake up at 6am!
