These days when I'm procrastinating, it seems like I'm checking my twitter feed and finding interesting education or art related articles to read. Today, I found this one! The writer is a technology coordinator for a school and one of the teachers complained to him that several kids were playing on their ipads or other devices instead of focusing on their work. Yes, it is true that phones and things are distracting sometimes but if we, as teachers, can set up classroom rules, expectations and etiquette which make sense, there may be less problems.
I won't go over all the instructional design and student management strategies listed in the blog post. Reading over all the points, you'd think it's common sense, but it's useful to see it written out instead of just having the concepts float around in your head. I liked "take time to practice using iPads for specific purposes." Instead of fighting evolution, why not embrace it and try to figure out ways we can use them as tools for learning?
I also really liked "boring lessons are still boring with technology." To manage a class well, you must plan your lesson well with varied and interactive activities which will keep all your students engaged. Of course this is always easier said than done but they can't blame us for trying!
Anyway, here is the link to the article if you'd like to take a gander when you've got a spare minute or two~ or if you're procrastinating from real homework like me at the moment.... :)
