We had the opportunity to experience a video conferencing session with the Royal Tyrrell Museum in Drumheller during Communications Technology class the other day :) It was a little awkward interacting with the TV screen in the beginning, but it was very engaging and lots of fun. Since I sat right up front and center (getting to class slightly later than others...) we got to play "count the blue dinosaurs" haha. I can see how such a game could help little students develop teamwork because we were encouraged to discuss and decide on the right answer with our teammates.
The level of interaction was more than I anticipated. We could ask questions that the presenter may not have been expecting, but the team on the Royal Tyrrell Museum end would be ready to pull up resources and images relating to our questions. It's also great to know that they've developed programs and linked them to learning outcomes in different grade levels. I'm looking forward to incorporating video conferencing into my future classrooms.
The 3 I's of video conferencing, according to the Royal Tyrrell Museum:
INNOVATION
INTERACTION
INFORMATION
The Royal Tyrrell Museum isn't the only content provider out there! There are over 200 providers now. Some of these include: the Royal Botanical Gardens, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Centre of Puppetry Arts, and the Global Nomad's group. One website that I noted was the Centre for Interactive Learning and Collaboration.
